If you're thinking about adding it to your routine, here's what the evidence actually supports — and what it doesn't.
What Is Red Light Therapy?
Red light therapy — formally called photobiomodulation (PBM) — uses specific wavelengths of red and near-infrared (NIR) light to interact with cells. The primary mechanism involves light being absorbed by mitochondria, which then produce more ATP (cellular energy). Secondary effects include changes in reactive oxygen species, nitric oxide release, and gene expression.
The key wavelengths are 630–660nm (red, visible) and 810–850nm (near-infrared, not visible to the naked eye). Most quality devices deliver both. Wavelengths outside these ranges — including far infrared — work through different mechanisms and shouldn't be confused with photobiomodulation.
What the Evidence Actually Supports
Skin Quality and Anti-Aging
This is the best-supported consumer application. Multiple randomized controlled trials have found that red and near-infrared light stimulates collagen production, improves skin texture, reduces fine lines and wrinkles, and helps with acne. The FDA has cleared low-level laser therapy (LLLT) devices for promoting hair growth in both men and women with androgenic alopecia. Multiple trials support efficacy. This is one of the most evidence-backed applications of photobiomodulation.
Muscle Recovery and Joint Comfort
A 2016 meta-analysis in the Journal of Athletic Training reviewed 13 randomized controlled trials and found that pre-exercise red light treatment significantly reduced delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS) and sped recovery. Several trials have also shown reduction in joint pain and stiffness — particularly in knee osteoarthritis — though effect sizes vary.
Wound Healing
Red light's role in accelerating wound healing has clinical evidence going back decades. It's one of the earliest studied applications, with a reasonable body of evidence supporting improved healing rates for minor wounds and post-surgical recovery.
What the Evidence Does NOT Support
Here's where most red light therapy brands go wrong. The following claims are either unsupported, exaggerated, or based on in-vitro or animal studies that haven't translated to human trials:
- Fat loss or body contouring — some devices are marketed for this, the evidence is weak and the mechanisms are speculative
- Detoxification — red light does not detox you; this is not a thing
- Treatment for serious disease — depression, Alzheimer's, cancer treatment adjuncts are being studied but are nowhere near established as consumer applications
- Overnight results — the clinical trials that showed real benefits used consistent application over weeks to months, not single sessions
What to Look for in a Device
If you're buying a red light panel, the key specs that actually matter:
- Wavelengths: 630–660nm and 810–850nm are the studied ranges. Ignore devices that only list vague "red" or "infrared" without specific nanometer values.
- Power density (irradiance): Measured in mW/cm². Most clinical studies used 20–200 mW/cm² at the skin surface. Underpowered devices require much longer sessions to deliver equivalent doses.
- Coverage area: A full-body panel covers the whole surface in one session. Smaller panels require multiple repositioning.
- EMF: Quality panels minimize electromagnetic field exposure, which matters for daily use at close range.
How to Use It
The protocols that showed results in clinical trials typically used:
- 10–20 minute sessions
- 3–5 times per week
- Consistent use over 4–12 weeks before evaluating results
- Distance of 6–12 inches from the panel for most applications
