Red Light Therapy: Benefits, Wavelengths & How to Use It

Red light therapy went from pro sports locker rooms to bathroom shelves in about five years — but most of what's online is either hype or confusion. Here's the honest version.

What it is. Red light therapy (also called photobiomodulation) uses specific wavelengths of red and near-infrared light — most commonly 630nm, 660nm, and 850nm — that are absorbed by your cells and are designed to support natural energy (ATP) production. More cellular energy is associated with faster tissue repair and healthier skin.

Where the evidence is strongest

  • Skin quality & collagen — multiple randomized trials show improved collagen density and skin texture over 8–12 weeks of consistent use.
  • Muscle recovery — reduced soreness (DOMS) when used around training.
  • Joint comfort — moderate evidence for everyday aches.

What it won't do: melt fat, "detox" your body, or cure disease. Anyone claiming that is selling, not explaining.

The two wavelengths that matter

660nm (visible red) works closer to the surface — ideal for skin. 850nm (near-infrared) penetrates deeper — better for muscles and joints. The best full-body devices deliver both.

How to use it

  • Time: 10–20 minutes per area
  • Frequency: 3–5x per week — daily is fine
